Since 2004, the small Japanese island of Naoshima has featured the Chichu Art Museum. Noted architect Tadao Ando designed the museum to be primarily underground in order to blend the museum together with its natural surroundings. Since one of Ando’s primary characteristics is the use of natural light, he designed skylights and small ceiling openings to bring sunlight into the interior of the concrete museum. This unique design illustrates Ando’s skill at incorporating natural light into his buildings despite no matter what their exterior shape or location is.
